A new day is dawning.

You sometimes hear people say: “The crisis isn’t over yet.” Or: “Things will never be like they used to be.” The retail sector is indeed still struggling with the problem of today’s consumers being reticent about spending their money. The first statement is therefore fairly accurate, but I also think the second statement is true. Although it is used in a negative context most of the time, I prefer to look at today’s situation more positively. The economic crisis has been a wake-up call for the entire sector and things have been bleak for a number years. Then again, it’s too late to lock the stable door after the “consumer” has bolted!

Organisations in the chain have again started thinking about their competitive strength and about their range of products, variation and, last but not least, quality. Quality is an important factor in helping you to entice consumers to spend more money in your shop. People are usually willing to pay more for better quality. This general rule applies especially to fresh products! With meat products, for example, we have noticed that consumers value quality. Our sales are growing and growing so we are doing everything we can to raise our quality level even higher. Full steam ahead!

I’m writing this first blog on 2 January, shortly after the turn of the year, but also shortly before our company, after preparing for a year, changes its name to “Group of Butchers” on 5 January 2015.
I’ve not only been a butcher all my life, I also feel connected to my fellow butchers/product developers in Alken, Oosterzele, Soest, Amsterdam, Tilburg and Eersel. Together, we think about the tastiest hams, beef tartare, rotisserie, smoked sausages, meatballs, beef specialities and grilled meat products every day.

As of 5 January, we will all be called Group of Butchers. We are a group of companies, but we are also a club of like-minded butchers. We believe in freshness and we also believe that a new day is dawning. Let’s make something special!

Hans, a butcher in heart and soul
